About Us
The Canadian Lobster Research Network (CLRN), led by the industry, is a dedicated research platform for fostering collaboration amongst all stakeholders in the Canadian Lobster fisheries. We strive to bring together individuals from industry, Indigenous communities, academia, government, and research groups to ensure the sustainable and profitable future of the fisheries amidst rapid ecosystem and climate changes.
Goals
Through the collaboration of our diverse group of stakeholders, our mission is to conduct innovative, multidisciplinary research that will address the ever-changing challenges facing this critical resource and the ecosystems surrounding it. While the list is not exhaustive, it is a glimpse into what we are focussing on:
Facilitate Research Supporting the Industry
Facilitate research that supports sustainable and profitable exploitation of Canadian lobster fisheries in the face of rapid climate and ecosystem changes.
Better Access to Funding
Facilitate increased access to sources of research funding, particularly for partnerships between academia and industry.
Capacity Building
Train the next generation of lobster biologists and social scientists through participation in a strong multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder platform.
Address New Issues Quickly
Provide the capacity to quickly tackle new questions relevant to the lobster industry as they arise.
Data Hub
Establish a centralized, secure, and accessible data hub for research data relating to the lobster industry, empowering stakeholders to access, manage, collaborate, and analyze data effectively.
Integrate Biological and socioeconomic information
Gather and integrate biological data on lobster, as well as social and economic knowledge of lobster fisheries at the scale of the species’ range in Canada.
Co-construct Research
Co-construct research activities involving industry, Indigenous groups, academia and government.
Network of Collaborators
Establish a network of collaborators with different skills and resources that provides unprecedented capacity for data collection and research on lobster and lobster fisheries.

Lobster Node
The CLRN's foundation was built upon the success of the Canadian Fisheries Research Network's (CFRN) Lobster Node.
The pioneering industry-led research initiative saw the collaboration of 22 lobster fishing organizations, researchers representing 5 universities, and scientists from DFO's 4 Atlantic regions. From 2010 until 2016, the union of these forces generated ground-breaking knowledge on lobster genetics, larval dispersal, egg production, and more, all of which were published in 27 peer-reviewed articles.
